As expected, voter turnout in the primary election Tuesday was much higher among Republicans than Democrats. In Greene County, 768 voters – 11.38 percent of the registered voters – cast ballots. That figure included 607 ballots in the Republican primary and 161 ballots in the Democratic primary.
Unofficial election results were released at 9:45 Tuesday night by the county auditor’s office.
In the only local race on the Republican ballot, Kristi Holz won the party’s nomination for county treasurer with 304 votes, 57.14 percent of the vote. Phyllis Drake received 227 votes, 42.67 percent. Holz will run in November against incumbent county treasurer Democrat Donna Lawson.
Greene County GOP voters mirrored the GOP statewide in the bid to be a candidate for U.S. Senator. The local vote tally was Joni Ernst, 337 votes, 57.12 percent; Sam Clovis, 121 votes, 20.51 percent; Mark Jacobs, 65 votes, 11.02 percent; Matt Whitaker, 50 votes, 8.47 percent; and Scott Schaben, 17 votes, 2.88 percent.
Gov Terry Branstad received 485 votes, or 82.76 percent. Challenger Tom Hoefling claimed 101 votes, for 17.24 percent.
The only contest on the Democratic ballot was for the nomination for State Representative for District 47. In Greene County, Mark J. Trueblood received 65 votes (52.42 percent) to edge out Hans Erickson, who received 58 votes (46.77 percent). Erickson, though, carried Boone County with 117 votes compared to 70 for Trueblood. Erickson won the Democratic nomination with a total of 175 votes (56.3 percent). Trueblood finished with 135 votes (43.4 percent). Erickson will run against incumbent Republican Chip Baltimore.
